Spring has arrived not only with warmer weather, but also with the blooming of trees and flowers. In Hungary, there are now a huge number of gardens where visitors can pick their own flowers, be it tulips, daffodils, or hyacinths. The We Love Budapest website has featured three gardens near the capital.
In the Bálint Family’s Garden in Százhalombatta (35 kilometers south of Budapest), daffodils are waiting for visitors, and soon tulips and peonies will also be on offer. Entrance is free of charge during opening hours, the flowers are available for 50 forints (0.12 euros) per flower stalk, and you can also buy delicacies and jams from the producers. Not far from the garden, on the border of Érd and Százhalombatta, you can watch the brilliant blue Danube from a 60-meter high bank, and there is also an archaeological park nearby.

From April 4, you can go flower-picking in the TulipGarden Dunakanyar in Kosd (45 kilometers north of Budapest), where daffodils and hyacinths are waiting to be tied into bunches. You can also pick tulips in this garden later. The entrance fee is 1,000 forints (2.5 euros), and the flowers can be collected for 300 forints (0.74 euros) per stalk. There are numerous hiking opportunities in the area before or after the flower picking, and the Vácrátót Botanical Garden is also nearby.
If you are in Tatabánya (60 kilometers northwest of Budapest), it is worth visiting the Farkas Garden Center, where you can pick a variety of balcony plants and take part in the pick-your-own daffodils campaign. Entrance is free, and flowers are available for 35 forints (0.08 euros) per stalk. This area also offers many hiking opportunities.
From the site, you can drive to the Turul monument in 10 minutes, and you can also go on a wonderful hike to the Szelim cave, where The Witcher was filmed.
If we venture further afield from Budapest, the Balaton region also offers a number of gardens, perhaps one of the most famous of which is the Lavender Garden at Kőröshegy. Do not be fooled by the name, you can no longer admire the lavender in summer, the tulip harvest will start on April 4.
The pick-your-own promotions are compiled on a website across the country, which is worth keeping an eye on later in the fruit and vegetable season as well. When picking flowers, make sure you have the right pruning shears and basket. Although most places have them, it might be more convenient to bring your own. It is also important to look after the health of your plants, picking only open flowers and not trampling the stems.
As flowering is affected by the weather, it is advisable to check the website or social media page of the gardens before visiting.
