Zsolt Lőw has been appointed head coach of RB Leipzig, the football team that employs Péter Gulácsi and Willi Orbán, both members of the Hungarian national team. Lőw’s predecessor, Marco Rose, was relieved of his duties on Sunday with immediate effect by the club’s management.

The 45-year-old Hungarian, who is currently on the staff of Red Bull’s head of football development Jürgen Klopp, has already worked as an assistant coach at the Leipzig club between 2015 and 2018, and will now take over until the end of the season while the management searches for a permanent solution. According to the German club’s website, Lőw will start on Monday and will be assisted by Peter Krawietz.

Zsolt Lőw was assistant coach in Austria at Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg, and after his years in Leipzig, he worked as an assistant to Thomas Tuchel at Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich.

He won Champions League titles with the English team, and league titles with the German and French sides. This is his first stint as head coach.

RB Leipzig are currently sixth in the Bundesliga and semi-finalists in the German Cup. Lőw’s first match will be the cup semi-final against VfB Stuttgart on Wednesday.

Speaking to M4 Sport about his new job, Lőw said that they helped former coach Marco Rose with the team, but this partnership was no longer fruitful, and so the parties decided to go their separate ways. He explained that his main expectation is that the team will play attractive, aggressive, and dynamic football. “We start with a cup semi-final on Wednesday; the aim is to qualify, but it will not be easy after two days of working together. And after that, the main goal is to finish in one of the Champions League qualification places,” he said.

“I am at a time when I have taken a break from coaching and decided, together with my family, to go in a different direction. I stayed in football, but I was given a top management role at Red Bull. I really enjoyed the job, it suited me and our current life. I have travelled a lot and learned a lot as I have had the opportunity. But now it is a period like this. The Leipzig club is one of Red Bull’s flagships, so it is important to take care of it and get good results,” he emphasized.

Zsolt Lőw has what it takes to improve the team’s performance significantly under his leadership: he has the right approach, a wealth of experience, and a very successful track record at top European clubs.

It is now up to the team to turn the club’s fortunes around together with Zsolt’s help. In parallel, we are working on filling the coaching position for the 2025/26 season,” said sporting director Marcel Schäfer on the club’s website.

The last Hungarian head coach in the Bundesliga was Pál Dárdai at Hertha BSC.
