Cogwheel Train Awaits Challengers for 1,700 Euros Prize

Hungary Today 2025.03.26.

Spring can not start without Budapest’s unique sports day, the “Get ahead of the cogwheel train!” event. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the race. Anyone can challenge getting ahead the red mountain railway located in the hills of Buda, with special prizes and sporting activities awaiting participants at the top of the hill, reported Magyar Nemzet.

Winning is not that simple however, as the cogwheel railway, which celebrated its 150th birthday last year, is age-defyingly good at keeping up the pace. To be a worthy challenger, the racers have to complete the 4-kilometer climb in around 15 minutes, which is a strenuous challenge in itself.

The ascent is no child’s play either, at 325 meters to be precise, which makes the race a hard challenge for even the best athletes. Still, every year hundreds of people take up the challenge and compete it in different sports.

The event is open to the bravest runners and cyclists, as well as anyone who feels up to the challenge.

Every year, the adventure can be completed not only individually but also in relay teams. This year the race will take place on May 10.

The race will also be for the total prize money of 700,000 forints (1,700 euros).

If you decide to take it slow however, you can sign up with your family, children or a group of hikers. Those who complete the race will be rewarded with a valuable prize package, sporting activities and special items on top of the hill.
