300 Kilograms of Drugs Seized by Police in Two Weeks

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.03.20.

Police seized 300 kilograms of drugs in the past two weeks during raids announced by the government in the wake of its zero tolerance policy on drugs, the government commissioner for the eradication of drug trafficking announced at a joint press conference with the police in Budapest on Wednesday.

László Horváth pointed out that this means that the number of poisons in circulation has been reduced, thus the concentrated series of operations against drug criminals was justified and effective. Moreover, the decisive action has also led to a reduction in the number of dealers, who are distributing less frequently and in smaller quantities, as well as a reduction in the amount of drugs being sold, he added.

The politician said that since March 1,

the police had carried out concentrated checks at nearly 1,000 locations, involving around 3,500 police officers. As a result of these checks, around 1,000 prosecutions had been launched against drug distributors and consumers.

This means that in all cases where the authorities suspected that drugs were being used, they were found.

This also shows that the country has been infested with drugs to such an extent that zero tolerance against drugs has been justified, the government commissioner stressed. At the same time, he continued, the government’s initiative has also led to a stir in society in recent weeks, with numerous reports being filed with the police. This is important because the fight against drugs requires social cohesion. In this context,

he encouraged everyone to use the telephone hotline, which allows anonymous communication with the police, thus contributing to the fight against drugs.

“The manhunt continues. In parallel with the actions, a package of laws that will help the police to fight drug crime even more quickly and effectively will be submitted to parliament in a few weeks’ time,” underlined Mr. Horváth.

Viktor Sulyok, Head of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Budapest Police Headquarters, said that in the past period, 245 million forints (613,900 euros) worth of drugs and a significant amount of cash and valuables were seized from dealers. Since the beginning of the month, 17 drug dealers have been prosecuted and 117,300 doses of illicit drugs have been seized, the head of the department announced at the press conference.
