Fidesz MEP Kinga Gál reported on her social media page that left-wing groups in the European Parliament called on the European Commission to take over funding for NGOs and media outlets, after the money arriving from USAID was shut down.
According to Kinga Gál, vice president of Patriots for Europe, the left-wing politicians in question now “want Brussels to use EU taxpayers’ money to fill the gap for the agenda of these so-called ‘NGOs’ financed on ideological grounds and serve the political interests of the liberal elite.” She called the proposal outrageous and argued that the Commission must disclose what NGOs and media outlets it has funded, how much it has spent, and what it has expected in return.

International Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács wrote on X that the groups in question claim that “without immediate action—meaning more money for themselves, of course—human rights, freedom, social inclusion, and democracy itself are at risk. They even propose increasing media financing from these expanded funds.” He added that
many so-called “civil organizations” shut down the moment U.S. funding stopped—proving they were anything but independent.
“What kind of ‘civil’ group ceases to exist without American wire transfers? Now they want EU taxpayers to fill the gap for an agenda that has already failed in the U.S.—one that has fueled mass migration, ideological extremism, soaring energy prices, inflation, and Europe’s economic decline,” he wrote.

Kovács noted that the European Commission has not yet disclosed exactly who they have funded and with how much money. He emphasized that Hungary will not sign this petition, instead they will fight it. “This is not about civil society—it is an undemocratic attempt at external interference, paid for by those who will suffer from it. Our sovereignty is not up for negotiation!”
Fidesz MEP Csaba Dömötör announced in February that the Patriots of Europe will take legal action to force Brussels to publish EU contracts on the support of activist organizations. He stated that more and more is known about the European Parliament and the European Commission funding hundreds of activist groups across Europe.
These are activist groups that represent liberal Brussels politics in every country and do not represent the will of the electorate, but that of a narrow elite,
he said.
The MEP pointed out that the system is similar to the US Agency for International Development (USAID) funding system, but the operation is carried out in Brussels through several programs. He added that the European Parliament was also involved in this operation, alongside the Commission.
This is not just a dispute between EU organizations and politicians, he pointed out. He added that it was not only because the organizations involved represented policies that fundamentally went against the will of the electorate on issues such as the economy, war, immigration, and the protection of children. Their policies also threaten the livelihoods of Hungarian families, he argued.
