On Saturday and Sunday, the 41st International Mineral Festival will take place at the University of Miskolc – located in an eastern Hungarian town famous for its cave system – with thematic exhibitions, scientific lectures, a mineral fair, and children’s activities, among other events.
According to the program’s website, the organizers’ aim was to ensure that everyone interested in minerals, rocks, gemstones, and fossils could find an activity to suit their interests.
The International Mineral Festival focuses primarily on exhibitors and visitors from Central European countries, but also acts as a “bridge between collectors from Western and Eastern European countries.”
There will be “nearly 100 exhibitors, informative presentations, children’s programs. Guided tours are also offered to the university’s collection of historical value containing pieces from different parts of the world at the event,” says the fair’s official page.
Opal is this year’s mineral of the year, of which there are several varieties alongside precious ones. Examples include hyalite (also known as glass opal), which is completely transparent and resembles liquid glue; white opal, famous for it’s milk-white color; and liver opal, which comes in various shades of brown.
This year’s archetype of the year is radiolaria. These are unicellular organisms that live in the most diverse environments of the oceans, from the surface of the open waters to the deeper waters of shallow seas. The first radiolarians appeared around 500-550 million years ago, and one of their most distinctive features is their amorphous opal skeleton, according to the Mineral Festival website.
