The ice cream season officially started on Saturday at Lake Balaton, marking a period of economic recovery for local confectioneries and restaurants, the Balaton Tourism Association said.
Last year’s winner of the Ice Cream of Lake Balaton competition, Balaton Mámor (“Balaton Intoxication”), a walnut and fig flavored ice cream, is available again this year, with over 20,000 scoops sold last year.
Last year’s winner is Jenő Vadócz, confectioner at Promenád Kávéház in Balatongyörök (northern shore), who is also preparing for the season with a plum sorbet flavored with cardamom, quark flavored ice cream, and yoghurt ice cream with sour cherry sauce. He believes that
the ice cream season not only brings joy to ice cream lovers, but also contributes to the economic development of the Lake Balaton region.
The statement quoted the Balaton Tourism Association’s president, Tamás Fekete, as saying that the turnover of some of the confectioners competing in last year’s competition increased by an average of 15 percent. He stressed that
the Balaton ice cream competition is not just a gastronomic event, but a real tourist attraction that also has a positive impact on the economy of the region.
