The teaching of artificial intelligence (AI) will start soon at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) where students will be able to learn about the responsible and ethical use of generative artificial intelligence in the university’s business courses, reports Világgazdaság.

ELTE’s Faculty of Economics will open a new chapter in Hungarian business education this year by being the first in the country to introduce artificial intelligence education from spring 2025. Starting in March, a special course will prepare students for the responsible and ethical use of generative artificial intelligence, equipping them with skills that will give them a serious competitive advantage in the labor market, the portal quotes the university as saying.

The faculty has been at the forefront of the use of digital technologies in education, the university points out: lectures are video-recorded and can be viewed in the dedicated video library, and its unique electronic examination center provides assistance in the management of tens of thousands of examinations every year.

Last summer, ELTE’s Faculty of Economics decided to integrate artificial intelligence into its curriculum, so that students can acquire basic knowledge and practical skills in the application of AI systems.

The first step in introducing AI education was to train teachers to use AI effectively not only in their training, but also in the development of their subjects and in their research. To this end, the faculty has also produced a handbook on guidelines for the ethical and effective use of AI. At the same time, a curriculum has been developed to teach students the basics and uses of AI technologies.

The AI curriculum will be fully application-focused:

Students will learn how and what applications can be used to solve economic problems, and will be prepared for potential pitfalls.

Secondary school and university students are already actively using generative AI applications such as ChatGPT on a daily basis, but the conditions for their conscious and professional use are still lacking, and students have not yet received the necessary guidance for the correct use of the tools,”

said Tihamér Margitay, Dean of the ELTE Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering.

He believes that the introduction of the course will not only help students during their university studies, but also in the labor market, as many employers already value AI skills as an advantage, and this trend is expected to grow in the coming years.

Students at ELTE’s Faculty of Economics are allowed to use AI for almost any academic task, such as essays, research projects, or even theses, within a regulated framework. However, the university warns that while AI can be very helpful in areas such as text analysis, data processing, and brainstorming, it has its limitations. In some cases it can produce inaccurate, biased, or even completely misleading results. The course will therefore focus on the methodology of effective prompting and on the critical interpretation and analysis of the results obtained.
