Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó wrote a letter to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on Sunday regarding the four-point energy security guarantees recently given to Hungary, two of which he said had already been violated.
In his letter to Kaja Kallas, the Foreign Minister recalled that on January 27, when the European Commission extended economic sanctions against Russia for another six months, it gave four guarantees to Hungary on the security of energy supplies through Ukraine, two of which have already been breached.
Firstly, the Brussels body undertook to negotiate the resumption of gas transit to Ukraine with the involvement of Hungary, but the Hungarian government was not invited to these talks, despite repeated requests,”
Péter Szijjártó recalled. “Secondly, the European Commission also gave a guarantee that Ukraine would not attack the infrastructure responsible for energy supplies to the EU. However, to our deep regret, Ukraine launched a drone attack on the TurkStream compressor station Russkaya on the night of February 28. The security of the TurkStream is crucial for Hungary’s gas supply,” he emphasized.
In a letter to @kajakallas, FM Szijjártó demanded clarification on Hungary’s four-point energy security guarantee, which Brussels has already violated twice.

Mr. Szijjártó said it was unacceptable that an EU candidate country, contrary to previous promises, should take steps that seriously endanger the energy security of some EU Member States.
We also find it unacceptable that on a key issue, the European Commission is not representing the interests of EU Member States, but the interests of a candidate country against the Member States,”
he underlined.
“Hungary’s position will largely be determined by the issues raised in this letter in decisions on Ukraine in the coming period,” he warned. “I would therefore respectfully request you to clarify whether the European Commission considers the four-point guarantee to remain valid and to inform me of the steps you are taking to maintain these guarantees,” the minister emphasized.
On Saturday, Szijjártó reported on his social media page that a Ukrainian drone attack had been launched against an important compressor station on the TurkStream gas pipeline, called Russkaya. The three drones were reportedly disabled by Russian air defense. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov informed his Hungarian counterpart of the incident by telephone.
The Hungarian Foreign Minister recalled that the TurkStream pipeline is the guarantee of Hungary’s security of natural gas supply, and therefore the possible inoperability of the pipeline would seriously endanger the country’s energy security. “And energy security is a matter of sovereignty, so this type of attack should be considered an attack on sovereignty,” he emphasized.
