EU Caught Napping over 25% Trump Tariffs, Claims Fidesz MEP

The European Union’s leadership is woefully unprepared for avoiding a trade-war initiated by the Donald Trump administration, pointed out Enikő Győri, MEP for the Hungarian government Fidesz party. The remarks come after the U.S. President threatened to impose a 25% tariff on EU goods.

“The European Union was formed to screw the United States, that is the purpose of it, and they have done a good job of it,” Donald Trump remarked after his initial cabinet meeting on Wednesday. Earlier this month he threatened to enforce 25% tariffs on cars and products from Europe. In line with other global trade partners, the U.S. President complained about an imbalance, and even exploitative practices from America’s European trade partners.

During the press conference, Trump replied to a journalist’s question as to what would happen if the EU reacted with its own trade tariffs against the U.S., remarking: “they cannot. They can try, but they cannot… They can do it and they can try but the numbers can never equal ours, because we can go off. We are the pot of gold, we are the one that everybody wants… They can retaliate, but it cannot be a successful retaliation because we just go cold turkey. We just do not buy anymore. And if that happens, we win,” the U.S. President said.

In her reaction to the above statement, the Hungarian government’s Fidesz party (Patriots for Europe) MEP, Enikő Győri, remarked that “Donald Trump threatens to impose 25% tariffs on EU goods. The decision soon to be announced.

We knew it was coming. Brussels missed the opportunity to make a pre-emptive proposal attractive enough to Donald Trump. We all will cry over spilt milk.”

President Trump has already imposed tariffs against some of the U.S.’ key trade partners, such as China, Mexico, and Canada, only to suspend some of them. Despite rhetoric from the EU leadership, Brussels has not made any tangible initiatives or offers towards the U.S. in order to prevent the imposition of crippling tariffs that would seriously damage the economies of EU Member States already battling with high inflation and energy prices.
