According to a new study from Semmelweis University, edible mushrooms may hold promise in the regulation of metabolism and blood sugar levels, which suggests that bioactive compounds in medicinal mushrooms may prevent or reduce insulin resistance.

If the cells do not respond properly to insulin, they can lead to elevated glucose levels in the bloodstream. This can damage cells and tissues, and over time insulin resistance (IR) can lead to type 2 diabetes, which affects 830 million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organisa,ztion (WHO). According to the Hungarian Diabetes Association, more than one million people in Hungary live with diabetes, and the number of undiagnosed cases may be in the hundreds of thousands.

However, a recent study by researchers at the university shows that

agaricus, shiitake, or oyster mushrooms may serve as preventive or complementary therapies in the treatment of insulin resistance.

The International Journal of Molecular Sciences explains that bioactive compounds found in mushrooms may improve insulin sensitivity and support metabolism. For example, polysaccharide fibers from mushrooms can trigger positive metabolic processes by feeding beneficial gut bacteria. The “good” bacteria help to ensure proper breakdown and absorption of nutrients and strengthen the intestinal epithelium’s defense system, thus reducing the risk of chronic inflammation, an important factor in the development of insulin resistance. These polysaccharides also reduce the absorption of sugars and fats, helping to control body weight, which is key to the prevention and management of diabetes.

said Zsuzsanna Németh, a biologist at the Department of Internal Medicine and Oncology at Semmelweis University, and the first author of the study. According to the release, the bioactive compounds in mushrooms have additional effects that may improve insulin resistance. These include their compounds slowing down the release of glucose into the bloodstream, thereby preventing sudden increases in blood glucose levels, and their active compounds optimizing fat metabolism and reducing harmful fat deposition.

The natural compounds in mushrooms have real potential to restore healthy metabolic processes. By promoting natural therapies and a preventive lifestyle, edible mushrooms can also provide additional therapeutic options in the treatment of diabetes,”

Németh explains.

Edible mushrooms can be consumed at any time as part of a balanced diet, but in the case of a diagnosed disease they should only be used as a dietary supplement under medical supervision, she warns. As extracts, they enter the body in a more concentrated and fortified form, which can be harmful if not used properly.
