Viktor Orbán said in his latest Facebook video that “what we have now is unacceptable, we will not allow people to be robbed!” The Prime Minister was referring to the high prices mainly imposed by supermarkets.
Viktor Orbán said that “we have successfully completed the dismantling of inflation in the year 2024, but in January, we still had to see that the prices of some food products started to rise.” He added that what they see is that retail chains and traders have implemented unacceptable price increases: flour prices have risen by around 40 percent, eggs by over 30 percent, dairy products by 39 percent, and even cooking oil by 10-11 percent. According to the Prime Minister, this is destroying people.
Mr. Orbán noted that
the government wants to reach an agreement with representatives of retailers to prevent this from continuing, as it means unaffordable prices for families and pensioners.
He stressed that he was confident that an agreement would be reached. He added that if not, Minister for National Economy Márton Nagy has been given the power to introduce a mandatory price freeze for certain products, and if that is not enough, they are even prepared to limit trade profits.
What we have now is quite simply unacceptable, the rise in prices must be curbed at all costs, we will not allow people to be robbed,”
the Prime Minister stressed.
Orbán’s call comes after data shows that among EU countries, annual inflation in January was the highest in Hungary with a rate of 5.7%. Besides Hungary, Romania (5.3%) and Croatia (5%) recorded the highest annual rates. In January 2025, the highest contribution to the annual euro area inflation rate came from services, followed by food, alcohol & tobacco, energy, and non-energy industrial goods.
