European Council President António Costa arrived in Budapest on Tuesday. After his visit to Warsaw, he came to meet Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for talks on the EU summit that will be taking place on March 6, reported Index.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán met António Costa, President of the European Council, at his office on Tuesday. The meeting was held in preparation for the extraordinary European Council summit scheduled for March 6. The event’s main topic will be about strengthening Europe’s security and defense capabilities.

Costa visited Budapest after his meeting with the Polish Prime Minister. During a joint press conference with Donald Tusk, Costa emphasized that the priority of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union is European security.

“Now is the time to act, to make decisions and to deliver on promises,” said Costa, referring to the package of measures prepared by the European Commission to boost defense capabilities, which the President of the European Council announced would be discussed at the EU summit on March 6.

Russia “poses a threat not only to Ukraine but to the security of Europe as a whole,” so “we are building a Europe that can defend itself […] and that can defend its eastern borders,”

said Costa, confirming that another topic for the summit in early March would be Ukraine’s reinforcement.

On Costa’s talks in Budapest, Tusk said he was convinced that “whatever the outcome, the European Union will be truly united” on Ukraine, and that on March 6, “Ukraine will be strengthened in its defense against Russia and Russia will be made weaker.”
