Direct Flights to Japan Could Soon Become a Reality

Hungary Today 2025.02.25.

“There is no direct flight to Japan from Budapest yet, but we are working on it,” Minister for National Economy Márton Nagy said on Monday in Budapest, at a press conference introducing the Hungarian pavilion at the Osaka World Expo, which will be open for six months from April 2025, reports Világgazdaság.

The Hungarian pavilion is already 98 percent complete, and participating in the 2025 Osaka World Expo is in the national economic interest, while Hungary is also participating with the intention of building its cultural and national image.

The government also has economic development and tourism expectations for the region, which include Japan, China, and South Korea. With more working capital coming to the country in the new factory-building program, the Osaka expo will also be able to showcase Hungary as an investment destination, Márton Nagy stressed.

He added: “Everyone thinks of Suzuki when it comes to Japan, because there are indeed many automotive companies there, but the investment incentive program is not only aimed at the automotive industry.” There are already 181 Japanese-owned companies operating here, providing a livelihood for 27,000 Hungarian families.

Direct flights are also a sign of the business and tourism interest in Hungary, with 44% more people arriving in Budapest from Japan in 2024, even without direct flights.

As Hungary Today reported earlier, the minister stressed that those who can bring German, American, Chinese, and Japanese tourists to their country can bring in significant profits. These tourists enrich Hungarian hotels and restaurants with the money they spend in Hungary. According to Márton Nagy, the World Expo in Osaka will enable not only the Japanese, but also people from other countries in the region, such as the Chinese and South Koreans, to get to know Hungary better, and strengthen ties with these countries.
