Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced that Harro Höfliger Hungary will build a new hall in Debrecen (eastern Hungary). The German company’s investment is worth HUF 6 billion (EUR 14.8 million), for which the state will provide HUF 1.5 billion (EUR 3.7 million) in funding.

The investment will create 100 new jobs in the city and expand its capacity for the production of special electronic machinery for the pharmaceutical and packaging industries.

Péter Szijjártó pointed out that

the importance of the investment beyond itself is underlined by the fact that the company maintains close links with both the University of Debrecen and the vocational training institutions in the city, thereby contributing to the development of the Hungarian workforce.

He recalled that Hungary used to have a serious economic imbalance between the eastern and western parts of the country, but that this has now been virtually eliminated. He pointed out that over the past ten years, the government had supported 129 major investments in Hajdú-Bihar county (eastern Hungary), worth more than HUF 4,000 billion (EUR 9.9 billion) and creating more than 22,000 jobs.

Mr. Szijjártó stressed that one fifth of foreign direct investment in Hungary comes from German companies and a quarter of Hungary’s foreign trade is with Germany. “It is no coincidence that in ten years the government has provided support for 318 large German investments, worth a total of HUF 3,800 billion (EUR 9.4 billion),” he noted.

He emphasized that

2024 was the second most successful year ever in Hungarian economic history in terms of investment promotion, and the second in a row when agreements were concluded for investments in Hungary worth more than €10 billion.

“Thanks to this investment promotion success, which created 18,500 new jobs last year, we continue to hold the employment record and we can say that never before have so many people been working in Hungary and never before have so few been out of work,” he revealed.

“This is a great thing, especially in the current difficult circumstances, as the international economic environment is far from favorable for investment and economic development in general, as wars and uncertainty are not the right environment for economic growth and development,” he said. He added that in a single year, 45 percent less investment has been announced in Europe and the value of greenfield investment has fallen by 20 percent. “However, the resilience of the Hungarian economy is shown by the fact that even in these difficult circumstances we can talk about a new investment here in Debrecen today.”
