Starting on Thursday and running for 10 days, the 10th annual Cziffra Festival will welcome audiences in several venues in Budapest. The festival will open with a concert by opera singer Erika Miklósa and pianist János Balázs at MOMKult. The Cziffra Festival Awards, the Young Talent Award, the Creative Artist Award, and the KvintEsszencia Talent Special Award will be presented at the opening concert, the organizers announced.

Among the festival’s programs are a performance by Széchenyi Prize-winning Hungarian music historian and music teacher Emőke Solymosi-Tari with Lajos Sárközy Jr. (violin) and László Váradi (piano). The music historian will guide little ones through the world of music under the title “Elves, Leprechauns, Fairies, Witches” in the Five-Chirping Salon.

The next stage of a series of concerts involving the participants of last year’s National Bar Pianist Competition in Memory of György Cziffra will feature the winner of the competition and special prize winner, Péter Pintér, a graduate of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, in a concert at the Hegyvidék Cultural Salon on Saturday. The concert will be hosted by János Balázs, Kossuth Prize-winning pianist.

The Cziffra Festival also hosts exhibitions every year, creating a link between visual arts and music.

Mónika Éva Horváth’s exhibition is on view at the Reich Károly Gallery at MOMKult until March 3. The Hegyvidék Gallery is preparing for the festival with the exhibition “Synergy,” accompanied with a musical guided tour on February 17.

Pianist Fazil Say will give a concert in the Great Hall of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music on February 18. In a concert titled “Tchaikovsky Essence,” Benedict Klöckner, András Keller, and János Balázs will perform Tchaikovsky’s “Piano Trio in A Minor” on February 19 in the Great Hall of the Liszt Academy. The second half of the concert will feature Francesca Da Rimini and the composer’s “Piano Concerto in B Flat Minor,” performed by János Balázs (piano) and Concerto Budapest conducted by András Keller.

On February 20, Mónika Lakatos, Kossuth- and WOMEX-Life Achievement Award-winning singer, Mihály Dresch, Kossuth Award-winning musician, Petra Gubik, Junior Prima Award-winning actress and singer, and János Balázs, Kossuth Award-winning pianist, will all perform at MOMKult.

On February 21, Lajos Sárközy Jr. and his band will play with the Hot Jazz Band.

For this evening, the MOMKult theater will be transformed into a venue reminiscent of the era of György Cziffra.

On February 21, Tamás Freund, Széchenyi and Bolyai Prize-winning brain researcher, will give a lecture at MOMKult. On February 23, violinist Vadim Repin and pianist János Balázs will give a gala concert entitled ‘Inspirations’ at the Liszt Academy. They will also perform Bartók’s “Rhapsody No 1” and “Romanian Folk Dances,” Brahms’ “Violin and Piano Sonata No 3 (D minor)”, Liszt’s three “Hungarian Rhapsodies,” and Ravel’s “Tzigane and Sarasate’s Gypsy Songs.” The Festival’s Talent Award and Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented at the gala concert.
