Germany’ second most popular party, the Alternative for Germany’s (AfD) joint leader, Alice Weidel, has had the dubious pleasure of experiencing Hungary’s anti-government activist media while on an official visit to Budapest. During a joint press conference with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, she was branded “far-right” by Reuters‘ female journalist, and was also asked about the Hungarian government’s position on family and gender-politics, which the German politician took as an allusion to her living in a same sex marriage.
In her calm and measured reaction, the AfD co-chairman has rejected the “far-right” party label, calling in a fiction. This is a label used by a non-independent institution, she explained. The Federal Office for the Protection of Constitution (BfV) is manipulating public opinion on behalf of the mainstream parties by discrediting competing political forces with the aim of excluding them from the democratic process, she said. In this they are violating the constitution, as the German basic law states that all political parties are entitled to the same treatment.
In Germany, this is not the case, continued Weidel. There is no even playing field for all parties, the AfD is experiencing systemic discrimination. This applies to the media as well, which is financed from public funds. The politician asked journalists to simply listen to what she has to say in parliament or otherwise – this is how they will learn that in reality what her party wants is simply a free country. And the first step towards a free Germany will be reforming the intelligence services such as the BfV, because they are not doing what they are meant for. Instead, they seem to be scheming against the AfD. She also pledged to reform funding for the national media, because they have become the mouthpiece of the current government’s politics, and are not asking critical questions. In conclusion to the issue of being “far-right,” Weidel objected against the Reuters journalist’s question. In her words, the AfD stands for free and conservative politics.
As to the question concerning family politics, the AfD also stands for traditional family values, she reiterated. “Supporting traditional families is important.” Referring to the journalist’s glaringly unprofessional question, Weidel pointed out that it is perhaps not an accident that she has been asked this question, because she is known to be “liberal” in these matters. “I live with a woman, we are raising two boys together… We are a fantastic family. For me the family is always there, where the children are. But this will not stop me from standing up for an ideal that is important for our society…”
Why do not you ask childless people why they are dealing with family politics? You could have asked (former Chancellor) Angela Merkel why she was preoccupied with family politics,”
the AfD politician said.

In Weidel’s view, what leftist, woke ideologues preach about gay and lesbian people, is not the reality that she is experiencing with her own partner. People like her and her partner would wish to be left alone by these progressive activists, she explained. “We do not want gender-representatives or drag-queens in schools. We do not want our kids to be confused with regards to gender issues, where some left-wing or green teacher, who fail to teach them maths or reading, teach them that they can change their gender once a year. This is damaging the souls and identity of young people. Simply because of my personal orientation I will not support gender, woke, and green policies that are damaging to society. Everyone should live according to their own will, and the state should not interfere with families’ private affairs,” Weidel concluded.
