Multi-million Euro Investment Announced in Sopron

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.02.12.

Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár announced several billion forints worth of developments at a press conference in Sopron (northwestern Hungary, near the Austrian border) on Tuesday, after representatives of the Ministry of Construction and Transport and the city government discussed the economic development at a plenary session.

János Lázár noted that Sopron’s breakthrough point was the construction of the M85 motorway, the final section of which was handed over last December. In recent years, some HUF 400 billion (EUR 994.8 million) have been spent on the construction of the road, starting with the construction of the Csorna section.

The minister stressed that in the next year, some HUF 6 billion (EUR 14.9 million) will be spent on the renovation of state-owned inland roads. In addition, the Sopron municipality will also carry out further road renovations from its own resources, with HUF 1.9 billion (EUR 4.7 million).

Regarding the development of the Hungarian side of Lake Neusiedl (commonly known as Lake Fertő in Hungary), Lázár said that Sopron wants to create conditions and opportunities similar to those in Burgenland, where most of the lake lays. “The aim is not to destroy the environment,” he emphasized, reflecting on earlier disputes around the development ideas, with many people citing environmental protection reasons against them. The minister said that he had asked Attila Barcza, a Fidesz MP for Sopron and its region, to lead the effort to bring the ideas of the city and civil activists into line to draw up further development plans. “Let there be more forums, more discussions, where a development concept can be made in open or closed circles, in cooperation with the population,” he stressed.

Lázár also spoke about the fact that Raaberbahn (GYSEV) is the city’s biggest taxpayer and employer. He emphasized that

the Hungarian-Austrian railway company is doing its job well, and the government would like to see it operate 1,200 kilometers of track in the future, instead of the current 450 kilometers.

The minister stressed that the construction of the M85 expressway was a breakthrough for the city, but that it was also necessary to look for an industry that would increase the city’s tax revenue. They would like to put an ambitious development proposal on the Prime Minister’s table, based on cooperation between the Ministry of Construction and Transport, GYSEV, GYSEV Cargo, MÁV (state railway company), and the Sopron municipality, he said. He added that in the future they would explore the possibility of using the 30-hectare municipally-owned industrial park next to GYSEV Cargo as a logistics and warehouse base, a kind of trans-shipment station between east and west.
