Paks Nuclear Power Plant Accounts for Half of Electricity Production

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.02.12.

The MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant closed 2024 with the fifth highest production result in its history. The four units of the plant produced a total of 16,016.6 GWh of electricity, almost half of the gross Hungarian electricity production and one third of the gross domestic consumption, the company said in a press release.

The Paks plant has prevented a total of nearly 250 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions so far, the company stated. They recalled that last year, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recognized Paks’ commitment to safe and reliable operation in its ten-yearly comprehensive safety review.

The OSART investigation report also recorded four “good practices” at Paks, including proprietary software that accurately and reliably predicts the timing of an initial event and the important events that may result from it, that are now embedded in the international nuclear industry’s professional community, they said.

They pointed out that

in the third quarter of 2024, the plant was ranked in the top 30 percent on the list of all the world’s nuclear power plants, and all four units were in the top 25 percent of a list comparing some 150 units at the WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators) Paris Center.

The company is also paying increased attention to its relations and cooperation with Paks II Zrt., which is responsible for the construction of the new units. The continuous monitoring, including the results of the monitoring wells in the vicinity of the plant, clearly demonstrate that the construction works do not affect the safety of the existing units of the Paks power plant, the release concluded.
