In an interview with Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that Ukraine has pledged not to attack the TurkStream pipeline infrastructure, which is now the only way through which Hungary can get Russian gas.
According to the minister, they were presented with a list of guarantees on three issues. The first one was that Ukraine would not stop oil supplies through its territory. The second was that they will not attack the TurkStream pipeline infrastructure, and the third was that Ukraine would quickly begin to resume gas transit.
However, Péter Szijjártó said that he does not yet see progress on the issue of gas transit throguh Ukraine, even though this was one of the guarantees by the EU as well after Hungary did not veto sanctions against Russia.
As Hungary Today reported earlier, on January 1, Russian gas transit stopped through Ukraine, after the Ukrainian side did not renew its contract with Gazprom. As Nord Stream 1, 2, and the other pipelines – with the exception of the TurkStream – have been slowly phased out between Russia and Europe since 2022, Hungary’s role has been significantly enhanced.
Today, only the TurkStream can transport gas from Russia, which happens to enter the European Union through the Hungarian-Serbian border.
In the middle of January, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Ukrainian forces used drones to attack an infrastructure that is crucial to the operation of the TurkStream pipeline that bypasses Ukraine. According to reports, the attack on January 11, was against a compressor station in the Krasnodar region of southern Russia. Russia reported that they destroyed nine Ukrainian drones suspected of carrying out the attack.
