Popular Spa Town Celebrates 100 Years of Its Thermal Water’s Healing Power

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.02.07.

A hundred years ago, medicinal water was discovered in Hajdúszoboszló (eastern Hungary). On the occasion of the centenary, a year-long series of programs will be held to honor the memory of its outstanding figure, geologist Ferenc Pávai-Vajna.

Gyula Czeglédi, Mayor of Hajdúszoboszló, announcing the program on Thursday, said that drilling began on December 16, 1924 in the area designated by geologist Ferenc Pávai-Vajna. As a result of the drilling, on October 26, 1925, 1,600 liters of thermal water per minute of 73 degrees Celsius broke the surface, the Mayor described the events that established Hajdúszoboszló’s reputation as an international spa town.

this was the first successful deep drilling in Hungary, and thanks to the thermal water that emerged, the town’s spa opened its doors in July 1927.

After the municipality declared 2025 as the centenary year, a rich cultural, tourist and gastronomic program will be organized to honor the anniversary of the discovery of the thermal water, said Petronella Majoros, Deputy Mayor. She pointed out that in March, in connection with the World Water Day, student quizzes and educational lectures will be organized, and local schools and civil communities will join the centenary commemorative year, strengthening local identity and the connection to the medicinal water of Hajdúszoboszló.

Petronella Majoros said that the Hungarospa Spa Complex will be hosting special events, such as a Night of Spas, centenary concerts, and a three-day Pávai festival will be held in the spa town in October.

To mark the 180th anniversary of the birth of Mihály Munkácsy and the 125th anniversary of his death, an exhibition of 80 works by the world-famous painter will open on March 15 at the local cultural center, and will run until September.

The centenary year will end with a conference of historians on “Hot springs and spas – opportunities and limitations in the 20th century” in Hajdúszoboszló.
