From February 6 to 12, there will be increased police checks throughout Budapest. The extraordinary measures may be related to the brutal series of attacks by Antifa activists in Budapest two years ago, reported Index.
The Chief of Police of Budapest has ordered increased surveillance throughout the capital from February 6 to 12 2025. The police said on its website that the purpose of the controls is to prevent, detect and disrupt illegal acts and to maintain public order and safety.
“Everyone has the right to assemble and express their views within the legal framework. The police will ensure this, but will not allow extremist groups to attack anyone”,
said the Budapest Police Headquarters (BFRK) on Wednesday on police.hu in connection with the Day Of Honor, which commemorates the attempted breakout of German and Hungarian troops from Buda on the evening of February 11, 1945. It is one of the biggest annual events of the far right in Hungary.
Earlier, on January 27, Bence Rétvári, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, held a press conference entitled “No place for violence on the streets of Budapest”. The topic was the brutal series of antifa attacks in 2023 that coincided with the annual commemoration of the Day Of Honor. At the press conference, Rétvári stressed that the terrorist organization had committed a series of violent crimes and that they would not be deterred from doing so again.
The reason for this caution is the series of horrendous attacks committed in 2023 February. On February 9 a group of seven to eight people attacked three polish citizens in Fővám Square in the city center. Two of the three victims also suffered serious fracture injuries. Following the events on February 10, a Hungarian man was attacked from behind in District XI. On the same day, in the evening, a Hungarian couple was assaulted in District V and a German couple in District I.
In order to prevent a repeat of the 2023 attacks, the police are working with both domestic and foreign intelligence services. Among the most important requests and information collected for the participants of the rallies, it was mentioned that everyone should follow the instructions of the organizers of the event. The rules imply, that they should not cover their faces even with a medical mask, and not carry knives, sticks, gas sprays, pyrotechnic products or other objects that are particularly dangerous for public safety.
Participants are asked to express their views peacefully and if they see someone who is unwell or in need of help, or if they have any questions, they should contact the organizers or the police officers involved in providing security.
At the press conference, Soma Csécsi, spokesman for the BRFK, said that for the time being in several districts of the capital, passers-by will not only be able to meet Budapest police officers, but also members of the first line police will be present, ensuring safety.
