“Meet Miska, who pays homage to Hungarian folk traditions and evokes the modern Japanese kawaii style at the same time!” This is how the Expo 2025 Hungary Facebook page introduced the host of the Hungarian pavilion at the Osaka World Expo.
The figure of Miska was inspired by the famous miska jug, which “has been a symbol of Hungarian culture for centuries.” This human-headed wine jar with a hat was once used to serve wine at christenings, weddings, and other festive events, and according to the post, “has become a symbol of community experience and the preservation of traditions.”
The official page of the expo informs us about his role:
The cute and playful figure of Miska guides visitors through the Hungarian Pavilion in a two-dimensional version (on the walls of the corridors) and in three dimensions as well in the wine bar named after him.”
He has a lot of friends who can be purchased at the Expo’s souvenir shop, the most significant being his female counterpart, the Mariska figure.
The official page of the Osaka World Expo says: “The next World Expo will take place in Osaka from April 13 to October 13, 2025, featuring participation from approximately 161 countries and 9 international organizations. The Expo’s central theme, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” focuses on shaping a more sustainable future society. Hungary’s presence at the Expo will align with and contribute to this vision.”
