Marco Rossi, the manager of the Hungarian national football team, believes that his team has the potential to succeed in their qualifying match against Türkiye in March in the Nations League. The 60-year-old Italian coach spoke about this in an exclusive interview with M4 Sport, adding that the first away match will be crucial.
He emphasized that from the summer they will focus on the World Cup qualifiers, but before that they have a very big battle with the Turks, a back-and-forth match for the right to stay in the Nations League Division A. “Environmental factors are always very important. They are not decisive, but they are essential.
We have not lost a game at home for a long time, and that is down to our fans, because the fact that so many of them support us like that probably encourages everyone to give even more than 100 percent,”
Rossi emphasized. He added that he respects the Turkish side, captained by fellow Italian Vincenzo Montella, and that he believes their players make a good team. “They are a little weaker than our two recent Nations League rivals, the Dutch and the Germans, but in recent years the Hungarian national team has shown that it can compete with any opponent, even if sometimes it has been better and sometimes worse,” said the national captain.
In the interview, Marco Rossi also spoke about what it will be like for him to lead the team in the 1000th match in the history of the national team, about the team captain, Dominik Szoboszlai, who is a key player for Liverpool, and Kerkez Milos, who also plays for Premier League side Bournemouth.
On the subject of Tamás Nikitscher, who has joined Spanish giants Real Valladolid, the Italian manager said that if he had not played for the national team, it would have been “difficult to imagine” that he would have continued in La Liga.
Everybody in Europe now respects the Hungarian national team, and I experience this personally every time we play away from home.
It has helped Tamás a lot to have played in six national team matches, but Valladolid should not be a destination for him, just a starting point. He needs to work hard every day to get as much playing time as possible in the team,” Rossi pointed out.
The manager also spoke about his two goalkeepers, Dénes Dibusz and Péter Gulácsi, saying that this year would be “a very important year” with World Cup qualifying starting in September. “We have a goal we want to achieve, but our group will include Portugal and Denmark, so to qualify for the World Cup directly, to win the qualifying group, could be more of a dream than a goal. Of course it is not impossible to finish first, but it is very difficult and we will have to play very well against Armenia and Ireland,” he emphasized.
The full interview will be available on M4 Sport at 10:15 pm on Friday.
