Hungary and the United Arab Emirates have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation, and both countries are determined to fight terrorism and promote peace, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

The Minister said that bilateral economic relations are developing dynamically, with trade between the two countries reaching half a billion dollars last year. Moreover, an agreement has been reached to expand cooperation to new areas.

“Thus, inter-company cooperation is being launched in the fields of oil and gas production, energy and renewable energy. In the banking sector, the digital industry, telecommunications and the defense industry, there is also a mutual desire for our companies to cooperate more closely,” he emphasized. He also underlined that cooperation in the food industry will be further expanded in the future as planned.

It is clear that the competitiveness of the European Union has declined dramatically in recent times, while the competitiveness of the Gulf region has improved dynamically. Thus, it would be in the interest of the European Union to build as close cooperation as possible with the Gulf region,”

Péter Szijjártó pointed out.

He recalled that attempts to establish a large, comprehensive free trade agreement between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council had been made in the past, but ultimately failed. “We propose that the European Union should also start free trade negotiations with the United Arab Emirates separately. The success of these negotiations could make a significant contribution to improving the economic competitiveness of the European Union,” he said.

The Foreign Minister then stressed that there are wars and armed conflicts in many parts of the world, and the threat of terrorism is becoming increasingly serious.

It is no coincidence that the United Arab Emirates is respected in international politics, because it has been able to act as a moderating influence in the Gulf and the Middle East, but also in many parts of the world, through its stabilizing, restrained and moderate policy, to resolve and mitigate violent or armed conflicts,”

he emphasized.

“We have reaffirmed our commitment to continue to work closely in international organizations and international politics to ensure the success of all initiatives that bring peace, move armed conflicts towards resolution and reduce the global threat of terrorism,” Péter Szijjártó concluded.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also traveled to the Middle Eastern country, where he held talks with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. This was the first official visit by a Hungarian Prime Minister to the UAE. The Hungarian delegation included businessmen representing domestic companies in the energy, finance, IT, telecommunications and defense sectors.
