EU Wants to Keep Facebook Fact-Checkers Amid Censorship Scandal

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.01.24.

The Brussels institutions, instead of rolling back censorship of social media, want to strengthen it even more, Fidesz MEP Csaba Dömötör told MTI in Strasbourg on Thursday.

Summing up the events of this week’s plenary session of the European Parliament, the MEP recalled that Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, admitted recently that Facebook censored on political grounds and that therefore the fact-checkers are being dismissed in America because they made many mistakes. However, this is not the situation in Europe. As Csaba Dömötör pointed out, Henna Virkkunen, the EU Commissioner for technological sovereignty, security and democracy, said during the Parliament’s plenary debate on digital services that there was a need for content moderation and external fact-checkers, who, in her view, had been censored in the US.

According to the politician, the EU commissioner stressed the importance of fact-checking systems, especially during elections, because they can draw attention to so-called sensitive content in time. However, she did not clarify what constitutes sensitive content and on what basis this is decided. The Fidesz MEP also pointed out that Facebook already operates a fact-checking system in cooperation with a consortium funded by the European Commission and linked to the US Democrats.

Censorship affects not only politicians, but also voters, especially those who want normality in Europe, peace, non-immigration and are fed up with ideological bullshit,”

he emphasized.

Csaba Dömötör noted that this week’s plenary session was the “127th time” that the debate on Hungary was put on the agenda, which was “marked by a remarkable lack of interest” – even the political groups that initiated the debate did not participate.

The MEP also reminded that Poland took over the rotating EU presidency from Hungary, but that they have a different approach. While Hungary’s aim was to restore Europe’s greatness, Poland pursues a globalist policy. In their presidency program they act as “war hawks”, supporting arms transfers and war escalation, he pointed out.

He added that on energy issues, the Polish government advocates a move away from Eastern energy sources, but offers no solution to the extra burden that will ultimately fall on European citizens, especially in times of record inflation.

In addition, they support Ukraine’s membership of NATO and the EU without addressing the resulting security and economic risks, such as the loss of income for Polish and Hungarian farmers, he pointed out.

The Hungarian politician said that Brussels was in favor of the Polish government because they were pursuing a policy supported by the Brussels mainstream, and therefore did not worry about censorship or propaganda, and even gave them a standing ovation in plenary.
