Budapest Has the Most Visited Money Museum in Europe

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.01.15.

More than 300,000 people have visited the Hungarian Money Museum in Budapest since its opening on March 15, 2022, making it the most visited museum in Europe with a monetary theme, the institution announced.

Csaba Csalami, head of communications, told MTI that the number of visitors is also outstanding in a global context, with the Money Museum operating under the auspices of the central bank, ranking third-fourth among the 46 institutions with similar themes.

According to the statement, the permanent exhibition, The Path of Money, attracted around 104,000 visitors last year.

The interactive financial knowledge center, with more than half a hundred spectacular installations, hosted 251 museum education sessions on 11 different topics last year.

The Money Museum’s main target group of pupils usually visit the museum in the context of out-of-school lessons with their teachers. Last year, the institution’s teachers also gave lessons to around 22,000 pupils in 160 schools as part of the “Journey around money” program. In addition, during the summer holidays, over 3,000 pupils took part in playful financial education lessons organized by the institution at the Elizabeth Camp in Zánka (northern shore of Lake Balaton), they said.

The statement highlighted that last year, their most popular workshops were on Modern Money Management and Family Budgeting.

In 2024, the Money Museum hosted more than 300 different activities – numismatic workshops, robotics sessions, and financial quizzes – that will continue this year.

According to their website, the Money Museum can be visited free of charge during opening hours, both for group and individual visitors. Even though there is no entry fee, it is necessary to register and reserve in advance, as the capacity of the exhibition is limited.

Fact

In 2023, the Money Museum won the European Museum Academy’s (EMA) Grand Prize. DASA Award, presented by the EMA each year, honors museums that are dedicated to education and communication in an innovative way. The Budapest institution received the Grand Prize for the content of its exhibition, the user-friendly exhibition spaces, and the effective way in which the museum disseminates knowledge.
