A new series of developments worth over HUF 1 billion (EUR 2.5 million) has started in the Gyula Castle Spa (southeastern Hungary), CEO Miklós Kun announced.

The investment is part of the development series, for which the Hungarian Tourism Agency has previously provided HUF 3.2 billion (EUR 7.8 million / EUR 1=HUF 412) with 90 percent subsidy intensity. The new children’s ‘water paradise’ was completed for HUF 1.05 million of this amount last year. As the spa’s social media post reads, the ‘water paradise’ was even awarded a gold-level certification by the Hungarian Association of Swimming Pool Builders (MUE).

Last year, almost HUF 940 million net was spent on the integration of the rheumatology clinic building, the extension and renovation of the main building that covers an area of around 1,000 square meters, and the creation of a new restaurant, as well as a wellness and beauty area.

Another planned element was the creation of a so-called thermal palace, but due to the significant price increases in the meantime, this was no longer within the budget. Miklós Kun noted that they have not given up on the original plans, and that they are looking for tender opportunities for the development of the thermal palace, for which they have prepared design plans.

The current development will mainly involve

  • the renovation of the riding school building, built in 1833
  • the hydrotherapy section
  • the weight baths
  • the renewal of the paving in the corridor connecting the spa with the Erkel Hotel
  • the creation of a canteen
  • and the renovation of the existing restaurant.

In the historic part of the building, the swimming pools will be re-floored and fitted with new geometry; underfloor heating, new heated benches and showers will be installed, and the lighting will be renewed. The work will be carried out by Futizo Kft., the CEO explained. He added that HUF 320 million will be contributed to the improvements from the spa’s own resources.

Kun said that

if the vision is realized, the Gyula Castle Spa would truly be the best in the country.

Other strong improvements of their own are planned for this year, including the reconstruction of the water slide pool, but these are still in the planning stage.

The facility attracted between 620,000 and 630,000 visitors a year before the coronavirus outbreak, compared with 598,000 last year. Last year saw the strongest summer in the last ten years; but also during the Christmas holiday period, between December 25 and January 7, over 28,000 people visited the Gyula Castle Spa, exceeding the previous year’s figures. The more than 3,000 guests on January 4, 2025, is also new record, the CEO noted.
