Budapest Hotel Hosts Exclusive Holiday Wine Tasting

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.12.27.

Wine lovers are in for a treat this holiday season as Budapest hosts a special tasting event for sparkling wines and Tokaj aszú on December 27 at the Hotel Intercontinental. Organized by Winelovers, this exclusive event celebrates the festive connection between traditional aged sparkling wines and Tokaj aszú, often referred to as the “king of natural sweet wines.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to sample over 100 domestic sparkling wines alongside international favorites, including Spanish cavas, French crémants, and Italian proseccos at three dedicated stands.

Representing 22 wineries, the selection includes 22 sparkling wines and 15 varieties of Tokaj aszú, offering a comprehensive exploration of these holiday classics.

Fact

Tokaj Aszú, Hungary’s legendary dessert wine, is celebrated worldwide for its unique production method and unparalleled flavor. Made from handpicked, shriveled “aszú” grapes affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), this wine combines intense sweetness with balanced acidity.

Dating back to the 16th century, Tokaj Aszú was the first wine classified based on quality and sweetness levels, measured in “puttonyos.” The wine gained fame in royal courts, earning the nickname “The King of wines, the wine of Kings” after King Louis XIV of France praised its extraordinary qualities. Today, Tokaj Aszú remains a cultural treasure, recognized as part of UNESCO’s World Heritage-listed Tokaj wine region.

For those seeking an elevated experience, the Champagne & Premium Aszú room will feature renowned international and Hungarian brands, available for an additional fee.

Wine College instructor László Bálint will host two engaging presentations during the event. The first, titled “Pearl & Z,” delves into the artistry behind sparkling wines, while the second offers an exploration of French sparkling wine traditions under the theme “Wine and Other.”
