A lung transplant, a rare and highly complex medical intervention, saved the life of a 14-year-old Hungarian boy. The procedure was carried out with the unprecedented cooperation of three Hungarian medical institutions, Magyar Nemzet reports.
The lungs of a 14-year-old boy suffering from a serious, rare disease were damaged to such an extent that he had no chance of recovering on his own. At the Heim Pál National Pediatric Institute, he was kept alive for weeks with the help of an artificial lung until the transplant could take place.
Enikő Kertész, Head of Press and Communications at the National Institute of Oncology, spoke to Magyar Nemzet about the operation in detail. “After weeks of surgical lung treatment at the National Institute of Oncology, the boy underwent a successful lung transplant,” she said. Long-term post-transplant care is provided by Semmelweis University, a key player in the institutional collaboration. Kertész stressed:
This case shows how the cooperation of different medical institutions can achieve extraordinary results.”
The boy’s condition has started to improve after the transplant, and although he has a long rehabilitation period ahead of him, doctors believe he has a good chance at a full life.
