The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced on Saturday that the Hungarian Embassy in Paris had received a bomb threat. Speaking to M1 television, Zoltán Lomnici Jr., scientific director of Századvég, argued that both the location and the date were symbolic.
Péter Szijjártó announced over the weekend that the embassy staff had received a death threat by email. The message was accompanied by a photo of homemade explosive devices. The Hungarian services are also investigating the case.
Zoltán Lomniczi Jr. said on Sunday that the Hungarian Embassy staff had been threatened in the symbolic capital of international diplomacy, adding that the incident had occurred at a time when the government had announced that pro-peace talks could enter a new phase, meaning that a ceasefire was possible.
As the government “intends to continue to take steps towards peace beyond this,” it can be assumed “that
this is a message, not only to Hungary, but also to the European Union,”
the constitutional lawyer said.
The need to take the terrorist threats in Paris seriously has been demonstrated by the events of recent years, he said, recalling that in November 2015, Islamist terrorists attacked six locations in the French capital. In the same year, the editorial offices of Charlie Hebdo were attacked by two jihadist gunmen, he continued, adding that a year ago, a radical Islamist killed a German tourist with a knife and wounded two others near the Eiffel Tower.
Still little is known about Saturday’s threat against the Hungarian Embassy. The foreign minister said in the statement on Saturday that the letter was believed to have come from an address in a neighboring country. Szijjártó added that
this is already being investigated by the Hungarian services in order to ensure that diplomats can work safely in the particularly difficult period ahead.”
The fact that the email came from a neighboring country, according to Hungarian Conservative, suggests that the bomb threat may be linked to the Ukraine war and Viktor Orbán’s peace mission. The news site recalls that Szijjártó received similar death threats before his visit to Ukraine in early 2024.
