Viktor Orbán on Ceasefire, Economic Growth, and Schengen Expansion

Hungary Today 2024.12.13.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán addressed critical national and global issues during his interview on Kossuth Radio’s Good Morning, Hungary! program. He shared updates on Hungary’s diplomatic initiatives, economic progress, and government decisions, reports Magyar Nemzet.

Prime Minister Orbán emphasized Hungary’s efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war, particularly over Christmas. He revealed that Hungary proposed an agreement to halt fighting and facilitate a prisoner swap, potentially reuniting hundreds of families. While one party rejected the proposal, the politician remains hopeful that the situation may change by the holiday season.

Ensuring no one dies during Christmas is the most important goal. As a Christian state, we have acted as we should, advocating for peace while most of Europe remains pro-war,”

the Prime Minister stressed.

Looking ahead, Viktor Orbán described the world as poised for significant transformations. He anticipates a pivotal shift in global politics after the new U.S. President, Donald Trump, takes office in January 2025, suggesting Hungary could play a historic role in these changes.

The politician highlighted Hungary’s diplomatic success in helping Romania and Bulgaria join the Schengen Area. He noted that this achievement strengthens Hungarian-Romanian relations, improves border security, and enhances Hungarian national unity, particularly for Transylvanian Hungarians.

Turning to economic matters, Orbán announced plans for a “peace budget” in 2025, emphasizing Hungary’s solid financial foundation.

The biggest wage increase in Europe is coming, along with higher minimum wages. Families will begin moving upwards faster than expected,”

he said. Recent wage hikes for health workers, teachers, and other sectors will expand to address lingering disparities.

Orbán expressed optimism for the Hungarian economy’s trajectory, citing the stability of 2025 plans recognized by credit rating agencies. “Huge economic capacities are about to launch,” he added.

The Prime Minister also condemned the spread of false rumors about Hungary’s involvement in Syrian conflicts, asserting the need for investigations to determine the source of such fake news.
