Minister of Defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky outlined Hungary’s defense strategy during his annual hearing before the National Assembly’s Defense and Law Enforcement Committee. He emphasized Hungary’s commitment to building a modern, combat-ready military while addressing global security challenges.
The minister highlighted recent acquisitions, including advanced military technology, as part of Hungary’s broader modernization efforts. He stressed,
our goal is to create a highly operational, highly combat-capable, digitized, and nationally-minded force to protect the Hungarian people.”
Hungary met NATO’s 2% GDP defense spending target in 2023, and plans to maintain this level, reinforcing its position as a reliable NATO ally.
Recruitment remains a key focus, with the I Love, I Will Protect! campaign attracting 3,500 young recruits to territorial defense regiments in just a few months. However, legislative changes allowing soldiers to be deployed without parliamentary approval and limiting certain rights have sparked controversy. Opposition figures argued that these measures undermine democratic oversight, while Mr. Szalay-Bobrovniczky countered that
the interests of the service must prevail over individual comfort; soldiers have taken an oath to serve.”
On the global stage, the politician emphasized the country’s commitment to addressing security challenges at their source, particularly in the Sahel region. He reaffirmed Hungary’s non-combat stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, noting that the training of Ukrainian medical personnel aligns with Hungary’s humanitarian policy. Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky also stated:
Hungary pursues a sovereign foreign policy complemented by military diplomacy,” with over 1,000 soldiers currently deployed across three continents.
Hungary’s focus on defense modernization, NATO commitments, and addressing global security challenges underscores its evolving role in international security. With rising recruitment and significant investments, the country is poised to enhance its military capabilities while navigating both domestic and international challenges.
