Tristan Azbej, Secretary of State for the Persecuted Christians Aid Program, condemned misinformation about Syria and highlighted Hungary’s commitment to aiding persecuted Christians, writes Magyar Nemzet.
The politician’s statement underscores the dangers of false claims and reaffirms the government’s humanitarian efforts through the Hungary Helps Program.
Mr. Azbej emphasized the importance of stability in Syria and the protection of Christian communities, noting that Hungary has supported initiatives to rebuild homes and churches, enable the return of displaced Christians, and preserve cultural heritage.
In Syria, too, we advocate for stability and pay particular attention to the fate of Christian communities. Hungary is helping!” he said.
As we earlier reported, Hungary closed its embassy in Damascus following the collapse of the Assad regime but continues to monitor developments closely. Regional instability remains a concern, as it can indirectly affect Hungarian citizens and the country’s humanitarian programs. Despite limited direct involvement in the Middle Eastern country, Hungary plays a significant role in assisting Christian communities and preserving their cultural identity.
Addressing false claims, the Secretary of State criticized rumors about a Syrian plane landing in Budapest and accusations linking church leaders’ (Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II) Budapest visit to Assad.
Anyone who falsely claims that a Syrian plane landed in Budapest is not only lying but also endangering Hungarian citizens in several Middle Eastern countries,” he stated.
He also warned that such misinformation puts Syrian Christians at risk, calling for responsible communication to protect lives and maintain stability.
Through his statement, Tristan Azbej underscores the importance of accurate information and Hungary’s commitment to international solidarity with vulnerable communities.
