Construction of Debrecen BMW Group Plant in Full Swing

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.12.09.

The construction of BMW’s new plant in Debrecen (eastern Hungary) is proceeding at full speed, and the plans are unchanged, the plant’s CEO told MTI on Friday.

Hans-Peter Kemser said that capacity had not been reduced and there were no changes to the planned production of models.

Pre-series production is underway and series production will start next year, as planned.

Pre-series production of vehicles has already started in Debrecen with the aim of starting series production of the all-electric Neue Klasse X model by the end of 2025.

As reported by Hungary Today, the first test production vehicles of the all-electric Neue Klasse X model rolled off the Debrecen assembly line in November 2024. This milestone marked the start of the final preparatory phase of the beginning of series production.

Kemser said that also according to the original plans,

the Debrecen plant was designed for a maximum capacity of 150,000 units per year at full capacity.

As with the start-up of any new model or plant, production capacity will be gradually increased.

On July 31, 2018, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced in Budapest that BMW will build a plant in Debrecen with an investment of almost  EUR 1 billion, capable of producing 150,000 cars a year, and creating 1,000 new jobs.

The foundation stone for the plant was laid on June 1, 2022. The BMW Group has begun construction of a full-scale car plant in Debrecen on 400 hectares of land, including a press shop, body production unit, polishing shop, and assembly hall. Shortly afterwards, in November, it was announced that BMW would also set up a battery assembly plant at its new factory in Debrecen, bringing the total value of the project to HUF 800 billion (EUR 1.9 billion).
