The agreement between the European People’s Party (EPP) and left-wing parliamentary groups for the entire European Parliament term includes the swift and full implementation of the migration pact, Fidesz MEP Csaba Dömötör stated on the governing party’s Facebook page on Thursday. He emphasized that the Tisza Party (Respect and Freedom Party) and DK (Democratic Coalition) are also part of this arrangement.
In a video message, Csaba Dömötör highlighted that the EU Council decided in spring 2024 to introduce this pact, one element of which is “mandatory solidarity.” He described this as a “misleadingly nice term for resettlement quotas.”
Mr. Dömötör recalled that Hungary and Poland strongly opposed the decision, but it was nonetheless forced through.
The pact, as the politician explained, also involves accelerating asylum procedures that would necessitate the establishment of new camps. This stands in contrast to Hungary’s policy, as the government closed such camps years ago. Initially, the pact proposes redistributing 30,000 migrants, but this limit could be exceeded in a crisis.
Dömötör argued that the migration pact reflects a policy of continuity, signaling to millions of people that they can move to Europe, as they will eventually find a country to settle in.
He criticized the involvement of the Tisza Party and DK, claiming that “Klára Dobrev (DK) and Péter Magyar’s (Tisza) parties in Brussels signed this pact.”
“We are accustomed to them denying it, but this agreement is in writing,” Mr. Dömötör said, reiterating his belief that the pact sends a problematic message regarding migration. He emphasized the Hungarian government’s firm stance against these policies, which they see as undermining national sovereignty.
