A recent survey by the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) has revealed key insights into the digital habits of young Hungarians. The study, conducted with over 1,000 participants, aimed to understand the usage of mobile platforms and social media, with a particular focus on screen time and app preferences.
TikTok and YouTube emerged as the top platforms for teenagers. TikTok was especially dominant among girls aged 16-19, who spent 37% of their screen time on the app. For boys, YouTube was more popular, accounting for 19% of their screen time, compared to 15% on TikTok.
The survey highlighted a generational divide, with younger users (16-24 years old) gravitating towards TikTok, while those aged 25-35 favored Facebook.
The study also explored screen time and app usage. On average, 16-35-year-olds spent 3 hours and 49 minutes per day on their phones, with social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram taking up nearly half of this time. Participants launched an average of 58 apps during the study period.
Two-thirds of respondents in the survey encounter fake news online.
While 60% ignore it, only 27% report it, 35% verify with reliable sources, and 13% discuss it. Those uninterested in politics face fake news as frequently as politically engaged individuals.
The survey sheds light on the digital habits of Hungary’s youth, showing a strong preference for social media, with concerns about fake news and platform-specific usage trends.
