János Bóka, Minister for EU Affairs, sent a letter of protest to Javier Zarzalejos, Chairman of the LIBE Committee (Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs) of the European Parliament, expressing discontent over the committee’s actions during Hungary’s EU Presidency.
Minister Bóka emphasized that it is customary for Hungarian ministers to present their presidency priorities to the relevant European Parliament committees, as he did on September 23, before the AFCO committee (Committee on Constitutional Affairs). However, the LIBE Committee “sabotaged” the presentation by making the agenda conditional upon a debate on Hungary’s rule of law. He wrote,
instead of doing any substantive work, LIBE made the agenda subject to an unrelated, political condition.”
This obstruction reflects a broader issue within the EU legislative process, where the European Parliament has blocked vital inter-institutional negotiations. Key issues such as the fight against corruption, the protection of crime victims, and the revision of the visa waiver mechanism are at risk due to political infighting. According to the politician, “the European Parliament is obstructing the constructive cooperation of the EU institutions on the basis of partisan political considerations.”
János Bóka also condemned LIBE’s actions as a serious violation of the EU’s principle of loyal cooperation. He stated:
it seriously violates the principle of loyal cooperation,” warning that such behavior undermines EU unity.
The minister urged the EU to focus on overcoming political obstacles and prioritize effective decision-making, especially at a time of unprecedented challenges. He emphasized that the EU’s strength lies in unity and collaboration, not in institutional power struggles.
