Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev visited Budapest, where he met with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Head of State Tamás Sulyok to discuss strengthening bilateral ties. The talks focused on economic cooperation, energy security, cultural connections, and relations of the EU and Kazakhstan, marking a significant step in their partnership.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Orbán, both leaders emphasized Kazakhstan’s strategic importance as a key player in Central Asia, particularly in energy and global economic development over the next 15–20 years. They agreed on deepening cooperation in sectors like pharmaceuticals, agriculture, water management, and air connectivity between Budapest and Astana.

Viktor Orbán highlighted that trade had doubled in the past decade, while MOL’s (Hungarian state oil company) two-decade presence in Kazakhstan underscores strong energy ties.

Future collaborations in nuclear energy were also discussed. Additionally, Mr. Orbán advocated for strengthening EU-Kazakhstan relations through a proposed visa facilitation agreement, reflecting Hungary’s commitment during its EU Council presidency.

The leaders also celebrated shared cultural heritage, with the Hungarian PM noting historical links between the two nations and gestures of friendship, such as Kazakhstan naming a street after Hungarian poet Sándor Petőfi.

President Tokayev also met President Tamás Sulyok at the Sándor Palace, where they discussed the nations’ shared historical and cultural ties. Mr. Tokayev highlighted Kazakhstan’s commitment to further elevating relations with Hungary.

Their discussions extended to addressing climate change and exploring joint opportunities in energy and water management, reinforcing Hungary’s position as a bridge between East and West.

The Ministry of Finance detailed the economic aspects of the visit, announcing seven strategic agreements in areas such as energy, digitalization, agriculture, and education. Hungarian universities formalized partnerships with Kazakh counterparts, enhancing educational ties. Bilateral trade has grown significantly, with exports increasing 1.5 times and trade in goods rising 2.5 times since 2010.

Energy cooperation remains a highlight, with MOL’s 27.5% stake in the Rozskovsky gas field and new initiatives like a seed factory and toll system involving Hungarian companies.

President Tokayev’s visit underscored the deepening of Kazakh-Hungarian relations through agreements, economic initiatives, and mutual cultural recognition. The visit marked the 10th anniversary of the nations’ strategic partnership and highlighted their shared vision for economic growth, energy security, and cultural understanding.
