An exhibition titled “Rubik 80/50 – Fifty Years of Magic” opened in New York’s gallery district on Monday. The exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of the invention of the Rubik’s Cube and the 80th birthday of Ernő Rubik, the creator of the logic game.

The opening ceremony, held at the One Art Space gallery, was addressed by Tibor Navracsics, Minister of Public Administration and Regional Development, and the organizers were represented by Balázs Püspök, Academic Director of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, and Csenge Palotai, Director of the Liszt Institute New York.

Students from the Moholy-Nagy University also contributed to the travelling exhibition, inspired by the institution’s ‘Rubik 50’ course. The installation, consisting of three sections, has already been shown in Tokyo before.

The aim of the interactive exhibition is to present Ernő Rubik’s oeuvre as comprehensively as possible through the important stages of the designer’s life, while outlining the history of the Cube and its cultural impacts.

According to the Liszt Institute’s website, the aim of this pop-up exhibition, consisting of three major sections, is to showcase the broad spectrum of Ernő Rubik’s work.

Engaging with the power of play in an interactive format, it illustrates the innovative inventions emerging today in the 21st century, right where the Rubik’s Cube first achieved its remarkable success.

In a predominantly digital world, this exhibition pays tribute to the Rubik’s Cube, a game that embodies timeless value, they write. Unlike the rapid obsolescence seen in many computer games, the Rubik’s Cube speaks to eternity, illustrating how true complexity often resides in the simplest of objects, much like many ancient games.
