At an informal EU meeting in Budapest, ministers agreed on the need to reinforce family security, national identity, and competitiveness to safeguard Europe’s future.
Balázs Hankó, Minister of Culture and Innovation, emphasized that “the Hungarian family policy model, based on traditional families, is an example to follow.”
Hungary dedicates 4% of its GDP, or HUF 3,750B (EUR 10.1B), to family support through three key measures: tax breaks, housing subsidies, and initiatives promoting work-family balance. Minister Hankó added that
ensuring the financial security of families and young people is crucial.”
He also noted the success of including the term “family” in the EU’s upcoming council conclusions on work-life balance, calling it a “small but important success.”
Zsófia Koncz, the Secretary of State for Families, highlighted Hungary’s efforts to address demographic challenges within the EU, stressing that this marks the first time demographic issues were prioritized. Additionally, she discussed the importance of sustainability in rural areas and Hungary’s new rural home renovation program to support housing and employment, particularly for young people.
