Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó reiterated Hungary’s strong anti-migration position during a visit to Copenhagen on Tuesday, where he met with the Danish People’s Party president, Morten Messerschmidt, and the Danish Immigration and Integration Minister, Kaare Dybvad.
The Foreign Minister underlined the importance of addressing migration at its roots, highlighting that Hungary has invested over half a billion euros in development aid for Africa over the past five years. Additionally, Hungary provides scholarships to 1,835 African students annually.
We need economic development, health, and education because Africa’s population will grow by almost a billion in the next 20 to 25 years,” he warned.
Reaffirming Hungary’s anti-migration stance, Minister Szijjártó stressed: “the safety of the Hungarian people is the number one issue. No illegal immigrants will be allowed to enter Hungary.” He criticized the European Union, claiming Brussels pressures Member States to comply with pro-migration policies, adding, “we find it scandalous that, while protecting the EU’s external borders, we are penalized with financial sanctions amounting to a million euros daily.”
Over the past nine years, Hungary has spent over two billion euros protecting its southern border, preventing 630,000 illegal crossings. Mr. Szijjártó argued that these actions prevented a far greater influx of illegal migrants into Europe. He asserted that
if it were up to Brussels, Hungary would be flooded with illegal migrants, but we will never let this happen.”
Péter Szijjártó praised Denmark’s “reasonable” immigration policies and noted shared objectives in strengthening external border protection. He concluded by affirming Hungary’s commitment to working with like-minded European partners to counter Brussels’ pro-migration agenda and maintain Hungary’s security.
