Budapest’s Public Transport Guards Begin Work with 75 Officers

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.11.19.

The launch of Budapest’s dedicated public transport security unit, comprising 75 officers, will begin in January 2025, announced Dávid Vitézy, former candidate for mayor of Budapest, now chairman of the Climate Protection, Transport, and Urban Development Committee.

Dávid Vitézy highlighted the committee’s oversight of the process and received updates from BKK (BKK: Center for Budapest Transport) and Metropolitan Police representatives, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring public safety.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to address antisocial behavior on Budapest’s public transport, including issues like fare evasion, public intoxication, and harassment.

BKK has faced significant criticism for inadequate responses to such problems, with passengers reporting discomfort and safety concerns. Recent opinions that appeared on online forums indicated dissatisfaction due to disruptive individuals, particularly on major tram lines.

Mr. Vitézy, a prominent advocate for urban development and sustainable transport, sees the dedicated security unit as a vital step toward restoring confidence in public transport. He reiterated the need for a secure, comfortable environment for passengers while balancing social responsibilities. The committee will closely monitor this implementation to ensure its effectiveness and alignment with passenger expectations.
