Korean Pianist Collaborates with Hungarian Jazz Stars for Unique Event

Hungary Today 2024.11.18.

On Monday, the Budapest Music Center will welcome audiences to a special event, where they can immerse themselves in Korean and Hungarian music at the same time. On this evening, Korean jazz pianist Chin Sooyoung, who is in Hungary as a resident of the Korean Cultural Center, will give a free concert entitled Jazz Frequency & Resonance with renowned Hungarian artists Gábor Cseke (piano), László Csízi (drums), János Ávéd (saxophone), and József Barcza-Horváth (bass guitar).

The Korean Cultural Center announced its third residency program, writes Magyar Nemzet. On November 11, Chin Sooyoung received his official commission and will be a resident artist in Hungary for two years. During this period, he said, he would like to collaborate with many of the top representatives of the domestic jazz genre.

Chin Sooyoung noted that this is his second time in Hungary, having already given a concert for the local audience last year. He considers it a great opportunity to spend the residency program in Hungary with the support of the Korean Cultural Center.

I would like to work and perform with as many Hungarian artists as possible, but I also have plans to record an album,”

he emphasized, adding that in addition to his own compositions, Gábor Cseke’s songs will also be played at Monday’s concert, so that pieces by Korean and Hungarian composers can be heard at the same time.

Admission to the concert is free, but pre-registration is required.

Chin Sooyoung, who is at home in the contemporary Korean jazz scene, holds a Master’s degree in composition from the Postgraduate Center of the City University of New York and was awarded the 2013 Louis Armstrong Scholarship from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

Recently, in addition to his jazz club performances in Seoul’s Hongdae district, he has been active in the field of modern and interdisciplinary art (a combination of arts that use an interdisciplinary approach involving more than one artistic discipline). He has also released an album with Isaac Hong, winner of the third season of the famous music show Sing Again, and has earned recognition as a truly versatile artist.

Hye Ryong Yu, Director of the Korean Cultural Center, pointed out that the residency program started in 2020, and aims to invite talented Korean performers to Hungary who can bring something new to Hungarian audiences. “We provide opportunities to work with Hungarian artists and institutions and deepen the relationship between the two countries in this field.

The biggest advantage of the program is that these versatile and talented Korean artists can share their knowledge with their Hungarian colleagues,”

emphasized the director.

Magyar Nemzet has learned that several criteria are taken into account when selecting the performers, one of which is to introduce them to Hungarian audiences in genres that are new and interesting.
