Hungarian driver Norbert Michelisz clinched the 2024 TCR World Tour championship, marking his return to the top of the touring car standings after previous victories in 2019 and 2023. The 40-year-old driver sealed the title after a nail-biting final race in Macau, a special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China, navigating tricky conditions and managing his points advantage over rival Thed Björk.
Entering the last race of the season with a five-point lead, Michelisz started sixth on the reverse grid, with Björk in tenth place, reports 24.hu. Rain delayed the start, forcing the race to begin behind a safety car. Despite losing a position to teammate Néstor Girolami, Michelisz maintained a steady pace, ensuring Björk remained out of reach. The Swedish rival’s eighth-place finish secured Michelisz an 11-point margin to clinch the championship.
The season saw Michelisz deliver consistent performances, starting with a victory in Italy and another one in Brazil.
Over 14 races, he achieved five podium finishes and scored points in the time trials, accumulating a total of 323 points.
Björk, who won the opening race of the Macau weekend, concluded the season with 312 points.
The Hungarian driver celebrated his victory on social media, posting: “We did it again! We are the champions!” The triumph highlights Michelisz’s resilience and skill, especially after intense competition throughout the season.
Macau’s dramatic finale underscored Michelisz’s strategic racing acumen, as he focused on maintaining his championship lead rather than chasing unnecessary risks. His success adds another chapter to his illustrious career, solidifying his position as one of the most accomplished drivers in touring car racing.
