Viktor Orbán Mentioned More than Any Other Leader during Trump Campaign

Hungary Today 2024.11.13.

A survey conducted by the Center for Fundamental Rights examined Donald Trump’s references to European leaders in the year leading up to the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The analysis found that Trump mentioned Prime Minister Viktor Orbán 109 times, far more than other European leaders.

The Hungarian Head of Government’s positive image was highlighted, with President Trump describing him as “strong, smart, and powerful.”

Trump’s frequent mentions of Viktor Orbán were significantly more than those of French President Macron or Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, who were cited much less often.

Orbán’s positive portrayal contrasted with the more neutral or less frequent mentions of other EU leaders like Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This suggests Mr. Orbán’s prominent role in Trump’s rhetoric, positioning him as a key European figure.

The relationship between Trump and Orbán has grown strategically important for Hungary, with the PM seen as an ally in Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

The two share similar values, particularly regarding national sovereignty and traditional Western ideals. Hungary’s strategic positioning in this context strengthens its role in Europe and with the United States.

The survey results underscore the close ties between Trump and Orbán, which could benefit Hungary in the coming years.
