During his visit to Jahorina (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó highlighted the recent pro-peace and patriotic victories across key elections as a positive signal for European stability.
Speaking alongside Republika Srpska’s President Milorad Dodik, Minister Szijjártó remarked that the Hungarian government’s allies had won in Austria’s parliamentary elections, Republika Srpska’s municipal elections, and the U.S. presidential elections. “Everywhere, pro-peace, patriotic leaders have won. This gives us more hope than ever that peace will return to Europe […] And stability will create the foundation for significant economic recovery in Central Europe,” he stated.
The Foreign Minister also expressed optimism for peace in Ukraine, noting that “every day of war brings more death, destruction, and suffering.”
He emphasized Hungary’s commitment to advocating for peace, despite it being a minority position within Europe, while globally, “we are proud to be part of this pro-peace majority.”
A key part of Péter Szijjártó’s message was a call for diplomacy rooted in mutual respect. He argued that international politics, especially in the Western Balkans, should “move away from the politics of threats, lectures, and sanctions” and shift to a respectful dialogue with elected leaders. He added that “the strategy of threats has clearly failed and has even undermined the right of local populations to democratic choice.”
On the economic front, Minister Szijjártó highlighted Hungary’s commitment to supporting the Western Balkans’ EU integration and fostering regional growth. He praised a program helping Republika Srpska’s agricultural enterprises buy Hungarian equipment, calling it a “success story,” with a budget of approximately EUR 26M.
Following President Dodik’s suggestion, Hungary plans to expand this support to more small businesses.
Additionally, Hungarian companies are preparing to participate in renewable and environmental projects in Republika Srpska, including a solar plant, a wind farm, and a wastewater treatment facility.
Szijjártó concluded with optimism, hoping recent shifts in international leadership will amplify “the voice of peace and mutual respect” across Europe, fostering more constructive engagement between the EU and the Western Balkans.
