László Kövér, Speaker of the National Assembly, continued his official visit to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) with a tour of the economic powerhouse in the southern region, emphasizing Hungary’s commitment to deepening ties with China.
The Hungarian delegation, led by Mr. Kövér and Márta Mátrai, explored Shenzhen’s industrial landscape, visiting major companies such as BYD, a top electric vehicle producer, BTR, a leader in electromobility components, and Huawei. The National Assembly’s Press Office noted these companies’ investments boost Hungary’s economy, strengthen technological innovation, and create thousands of jobs, reinforcing a mutual vision for economic growth and sustainable development.
László Kövér’s tour of southern China follows high-level talks in Beijing, where he met with Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.
The meetings underscored a shared aspiration between Hungary and China for a future based on “friendship and mutual respect.” Reflecting on Hungary’s “Eastern Opening” policy and China’s Belt and Road Initiative, he remarked, “despite geographical distance and cultural differences, our countries are united by a common desire for development and peace.”
The Hungarian government’s commitment to fostering relations was also underscored by Xi Jinping’s historic visit to Hungary this spring, establishing a full strategic partnership.
This visit holds special significance as Hungary and China mark 75 years of diplomatic relations, celebrating a history of economic, cultural, and political engagement that has grown despite shifts in global dynamics. As Hungary Today highlighted, Hungary was among the first countries to recognize the People’s Republic of China, a decision that laid a lasting foundation for their cooperation. Mr. Kövér’s visit symbolizes a deepening of these ties, with China now Hungary’s largest investor outside the EU and an increasingly significant trade partner.
Looking ahead, the Speaker of the National Assembly emphasized that Hungary will use its upcoming EU Council Presidency to advocate for constructive relations between China and the European Union, setting an example of partnership based on mutual benefit and respect.
