“Stratcom 2024” in Budapest Analyzes Approaches to Combating Disinformation

Türkiye’s Presidency’s Directorate of Communications organized a roundtable in Budapest entitled “Countering Disinformation in Europe: Building a Resilient and Secure Future”, on November 5.

The meeting, attended by representatives from Hungary’s major think tanks, members of the press, academics from Türkiye and Hungary, and members of the diplomatic corps, addressed a wide range of topics. These included the dynamics of disinformation dissemination, its consequences and strategies for prevention, tools to prevent disinformation, its impact on national and global security, and media literacy and verification processes from a variety of perspectives.

The roundtable, held ahead of the European Political Community’s fifth meeting on November 7, 2024, noted that disinformation spreads quickly beyond national borders where is becomes a threat to global peace, security, and and economic stability. In his video message to the meeting, the Presidency’s Head of Communications, Prof. Fahrettin Altun, emphasized the risks associated with disinformation, along with its negative impact on people’s access to the truth. Head of Communications Altun highlighted the importance of addressing disinformation in defense of the effective operation of democratic processes and the preservation of international stability.

In her opening remarks, Gülşen Karanis Ekşioğlu, the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Hungary, emphasized that disinformation represents a global challenge extending beyond Türkiye and Hungary. Ambassador Ekşioğlu also pointed at the importance of collaboration between Türkiye and Hungary in enhancing their capabilities in this area.
