New high-tech combat vehicles have been added to the fleet of the armored brigade in Tata (northwestern Hungary), further increasing Hungary’s security, the Minister of Defense announced.

As reported by Honvedelem.hu, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said that as part of the Defense and Military Development Program, the soldiers of the 1st Armored Brigade “György Klapka” received two Leopard 2A7HU tanks in addition to 15 new Gidrán combat vehicles.

The Minister of Defense noted that the new, multi-purpose modular armored combat vehicles of various types can be used as mobile fire control points, observation points, and as battery and platoon command points, increasing the maneuverability of the sub-units in the execution of the Hungarian Defense Forces’ domestic and international operational tasks. The Minister added that

the Hungarian Defense Forces now have 48 of the combat vehicles based on the Turkish Ejder Yalçin, which we have renamed Gidrán after the Hungarian horse.

Fact

The vehicle’s original Turkish name is Ejder, meaning dragon, but the Hungarian Defense Forces named it after a Hungarian horse breed with a very significant historical background, the Gidrán. The development of the Gidrán platform by a new Hungarian joint venture was announced in December 2020. The Hungarian vehicles technically constitute a fourth generation Ejder Yalçin with specific modifications for the Defense Forces, including LED lighting and improved ergonomics.

The Minister stressed that in order to strengthen the armored combat vehicle corps,

a total of forty-four of these high-tech military equipment will be delivered to Hungary by 2028.
